Essay test over social problems endemic to educational bureaucracy
Tuesday:
Creation of personal goal plan
Wednesday-Friday: film Simon Burch
Friday: essay in relation to elements in film

Introduction to Journalism:
Students will demonstrate the ability to:
~identify elements of sound theme development and design in publications
orally & in writing
~brainstorm possible ideas for theme develpment
~create a design idea based on knowledge acquired that adheres to journalistic standards
Monday-Wednesday
Examination of yearbooks from around the country & identification of elements of theme development & design
Thursday & Friday: critique assigned yearbook’s theme development and design

Lesson Plans April 25-29

Sociology:
Students will be able to:
~identify the impact of mentoring in solving problems associated with poverty and educational deficiencies
~explain the role of active parenting in individual success
~define the three parenting styles of: permissive, authoritarian & authoritative
~project the results of each of these parenting styles
~demonstrate in writing critical analysis of the last two weeks of study dealing with the issues of poverty, education issues, parenting styles & impact, role of community in individual success
Monday-Friday:
~lecture, classroom discussion & debate of issues related to stated objectives
~teacher evaluation of above as well as an essay and short answer test over material
~senior checklist: higher education admission & scholarship deadlines; how to access additional scholarship info; ck. on FAFSA progress for those committed to college; discuss aptitude testing options at Kilgore College; study skills & testing knowledge

Intro to Journalism:
Students will demonstrate ability to:
~identify elements of yearbook theme development
~composition of spread design for yearbook
~identify elements of strong photo composition
Monday:
~Complete CSPA Crown Award yearbook winners analysis
~written critique of a yearbook other than White Oak’s
~TAKS-Tues.-Thurs.
Friday: Complete stated objectives

Sociology:
~Students will be able to:
~demonstrate understanding and critical thinking skills by analyzing the long-term consequences of generational poverty
~explain the role of education in conquering poverty
~identify the role parenting plays in the financial and personal success of individuals
~consider through discussion the differences of urban and rural poverty
~explain the importance of mentoring and community in success of individuals
Monday-Thursday: continue study of Appalachian poverty and generational dependence through lecture, discussion & use of PBS documentary by David Sutherland “Country Boys”

Introduction to Journalism:
~Students will be able to:
~identify the parts of the newspaper
~identify and explains the elements of news
~list and explain the parts of a news story
~summarize the rules for caption and headline writing
~demonstrate understanding of power of packaging information for ultimate impact

~read Longview News Journal daily and discuss
~Thursday quiz over current events
~brainstorm self-generated story ideas
~explain basic rules of photo composition

~how attempts to minimize poverty often create generational poverty
~role of drugs & alcohol in poverty & family problems
~role of family problems in poverty, educational problems & substance abuse problems
~role of alternative education in addressing needs of students from poverty
