Monday:
~examine Texas education statistics compared to the nation
~examine United States education statistics compared to other countries
Tuesday:
~write a response based on research findings
~Wednesday:
~research and identify problems that contribute to limited or minimal success in education in America
~Thursday:
~after examining issue of poverty and its impact on education begin the documentary: Country Boys
~Friday: PBS documentary continued

Introduction to Journalism:
~students will be able to identify basic elements of yearbook graphic design
~students will be able to:
~identify importance of use of color in design
~identify unifying elements in graphic design
~demonstrate a basic understanding of photographic composition rules
~demonstrate a basic understanding of photo placement in graphic design
Monday-Thursday:
Lecture & class discussion using multiple resources: yearbooks, websites
Friday: handout National Scholastic Press Association critique handbook and read in preparation of individually critiquing a yearbook

~identify social problems that affect the success of students in public schools
~propose solutions and/or ways to minimize effects of social problems in relation to students’ learning in America’s public schools
~acknowledge the fact that ultimately students choose what they learn
~identify major historical contributors to America’s public school system
~list the reasons that a free mass education system has been important in America

Introduction to Journalism

~list most used Associated Press Stylebook rules
~submit a self-generated story idea for publication
~list & discuss the most important elements in feature writing
~demonstrate in writing elements of active voice writing
Monday:
~using handout review rules for caption & headline writing
~apply rules to daily newspaper reading (find poor headlines & captions and rewrite)
Tuesday:
~daily newspaper reading & discussion of current events
~go over feature writing rules and check against published stories
Wednesday:
~go over AP Stylebook rules
~AP quiz
~read daily newspaper
Thursday:
~Radical Write by Bobby Hawthorne Reading assignment

Sociology: The student will be able to:
~identify the five institutions (Family, Religion, Education, Government & Economy) which create and determine the success of society
~identify the essence of the five institutions in any given group and the roles they play in individual and group success
~assess the institutions’ health in a given group
~identify the necessity of division of labor and leadership in any given group’s success
~identify European origins of Sociology
(Auguste Comte, Harriet Martineau, Herbert Spenser, Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber)
~identify major contributors to Sociology in America:
(Jane Addams, W.E.B. DuBois)
~explain the role of Theoretical Perspectives in Sociology & explain what it is: functionalism, conflict perspective, symbolic interactionism,
Monday: View documentary materials over film Alive
Tuesday: discuss the five institutions of society and how they evolved in the experience of the stranded survivors of the Andes plane crash
(project how institutions relate to individual students and their importance in individual success)
Wednesday: lecture & discussion of European & American origins in field
Thursday: lecture & discussion of theoretical perspectives in field

Introduction to Journalism:

~identify basic Associated Press Stylebook rules that are most commonly used in scholastic journalism
~identify & discuss top rules of copy writing
~demonstrate familiarity with journalistic writing checklist
~demonstrate understanding of the Reporter’s Shopping List & Storytelling elements: Setting, Characters,
~demonstrate knowledge of headline and caption writing using AP Stylebook rules
Monday: read LNJ and discuss, peruse yearbooks for what does and doesn’t work according to rules of design & photography
Tuesday: Read LNJ & discuss, go over AP Stylebook rules
Wednesday: go over use of journalistic writing checklist & top 20 rules of copy writing
Thursday: read and discuss handouts on Storytelling & Features & Specialty stories
Friday: review of caption & headline writing rules
Test: evaluation of newspaper and yearbook samples by students
